Zinc earthing cell (basics of corrosion and cathodic protection)

Zinc earth battery and its application:

Zinc Earthing Cell (Zinc Earthing Cell) consists of two or four zinc electrodes, whose components are the same as zinc anodes. The chemical composition of these electrodes is similar to zinc soil anodes and they are produced according to ASTM B418 (Type 2) standard. The set of these batteries are placed in the back strap (usually containing 75% gypsum, 20% bentonite and 5% sodium sulfate) like zinc soil anodes. The uses of zinc earth batteries in the place of the flanges of the underground pipes to the ground which have an insulation kit (to protect the insulation kit against instantaneous voltages with high values, lightning and prevent the formation of an electric arc between the two sides of the flange in environments It has explosive gases (this is achieved by equalizing the two edges of the flange).

Installation method of zinc earthing cell:

The method of implementation of the zinc ground cell is like a dispersed anode in a vertical surface bed, where the cables of the zinc ground cell are connected to the desired structure. The method of execution and the relevant tables along with its appearance are given below:

Design and installation requirements of zinc earthing cell:

  • It is better to water the zinc earth battery for proper operation.Use chlorine-free water for watering zinc soil batteries.
  • It is better to use soft soil to return the surrounding soil to the landfill site.
  • Zinc ground cell should not be used in alkaline environments (with a pH higher than 5.9) and acidic environments (with a pH lower than 5) and at a temperature higher than 60 degrees Celsius.

For connection, a copper cable with a cross section of 10 mm2 or 216 mm is used and this cable is welded to the steel core inside the electrode. The junction of copper cable and steel rod is covered with epoxy resin.
